I believe humor can change the world, enabling someone to take some time out of their busy day to focus on what you’re saying. Now imagine that someone being a potential customer. In business, the goal is not only to make a profit but to connect with your patrons.

Infusing humor into your marketing strategy and campaign can help break down walls and humanize your brand. Think about an ad you’ve seen that has stuck with you; it most likely has an element of humor, which caught your attention and made it memorable.

The power of humor is limitless; small businesses can compete with large companies. In today’s age, humor can help an ad go viral – as we’ve seen with Dollar Shave Club.

Other great examples include Old Spice with their crazy yet crisp entertaining ads.

The Benefits of Humor

  1. Humor is associated with greater recall, which means messages instilled with humor will be simpler for your target demographics to recognize.
  2. Laughter is contagious. Creating your campaign with humorous elements permeates it with more people sharing your ad online, which increases shareability.
  3. Stand out.  Humor usually stands out from other advertising efforts because it’s naturally interesting and original.
  4. Brands that incorporate humor create more trust and are seen more “human-like”

How to Add Humor to Your Brand

Incorporating humor into your next campaign does not require much, you can start small by focusing on your social media accounts. Post images and deals that have some humorous element, thus giving it the potential to go viral.

Another way to enhance your social media presence is to communicate with customers. I would rather speak to a human than someone who replies to my message as if he or she is following a script.

Revamp your newsletter with more creative openers and include some humorous text related to your industry.

Create amusing product descriptions.

Coming up with creative yet funny copywriting allows a customer to get information about the product, while seeing the fun side of what you’re selling. “We don’t just sell chicken, we give you a piece of heaven” – I made that up on the spot, sometimes it just works.

Key Aspects

Still on the fence? Get over it and think about the opportunities that are on the other side.

Brand differentiation. You can use a witty voice to differentiate your brand.

Deciding whether to add humor to your next marketing campaign is entirely up to you, and trying something new can also bring about a positive change especially in the way potential.
